Christine Montera is making a difference as a teacher and teacher leader at East Bronx Academy for the Future in New York City. She works with at risk high school students, teaching Global History and helping them to understand that the world is much bigger than the South Bronx; that they can use their voices and intellect to make a difference. Through her coaching of Debate Class she utilizes current events to get the kids interested in being a part of the world and not falling into the trap of writing themselves off before their lives have truly begun. As a high school student growing up in Bensonhurst, New York, a rough neighborhood at the time, Christine knows how easy it can be to lose one's way and likely would have lived a completely different story if it had not been for one person, a high school teacher who taught her that regardless of the cards dealt to her, Christine could rise above and go beyond what she was given. Determined, Christine decided not to focus on herself but to focus on something bigger than herself which was to address the inequalities of education policies and the denial of proper educational access for some children. Armed with a purpose, Christine received her BA from Manhattanville College then went on to USC for her MA in Secondary Social Studies Education. She is currently attending The New Visions for Public Schools Hunter College for her MA in Education Administration so she can one day serve the role of educational policy maker.
