Married to Panamanian economist Ricardo Alfaro since 1968, they are the parents of Cristina Eugenia Alfaro (Mrs. E. Scott Carlis) and the grandparents of Summer Elizabeth and Dylan Copper Carlis-Alfaro
Educated in the US (Vassar College and Columbia University) and Europe (Universidad Complutense de Madrid), Guardia has authored more that twenty books, among novels and essays; and received several outstanding national and international literary awards in Europe, the US and Latin America. Because of her contributions to literature, she has been honored as a Fellow of the Panamanian Academy of Letter, and an Associate Fellow of the Spanish Royal Academy of Letters, the Colombian Academy of Letters and the Nicaraguan Academy of Letters. Since 1992, Guardia has been active with PEN International-the oldest organization of writers with centers in 130 countries that gather more than 30,000 writers, journalists, editors, and publishers around the world. The organization dedicates itself to the defense of authors’ human rights. In 2007, she was elected as one of PEN’s twelve International Vice Presidents, thus being the second Latin American woman writer, after Victoria Ocampo, to be so honored. In 1998, Guardia established the Iberian American PEN Foundation to protect writers from this region of the world, engaging them in activities promoted by PEN.

Gloria Guardia is a Central American fiction writer and essayist, winner of several important national and international literary awards. Gloria published in Madrid her first novel, Tiniebla Blanca, in Madrid, which was awarded the "Medalla de Oro de la Sociedad de Escritores Espanoles e Iberoamericanos." A writer of several historical novels, esays, and interviews, that have been widely recognized . With 30 years of experience., Gloria is looking forward to expanding her networking contacts globally and will most likely continue her writing for other professional writers as well. Her expertise includes but is not limited to research, copy editing, international relations, and teaching. She is very passionate about her career, and believes that discipline has opened windows of opportunity towards her success. Gloria is fluent in English, Spanish, Italian, and French.

As an author of several historical novels, Guardia has written a trilogy on current Panamanian history (1903-1999); one on Nicaraguan history (1927-1932); and one the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War.She is also the author of two books of short sotries and her works have been included in several international anthologies. And as an essayist, Guardia has authored books on the Nicaraguan mystics Pablo Antonio Cuadra and Ernesto Cardenal, as well a on the Panamanian novelist and poet, Rogelio Sinán.
