Jodi Norton is a dynamic, incredibly inspiring athlete and entrepreneur, currently serving as President of Lupus Inspiration Foundation for Excellence (L.I.F.E.) which she co-founded in 2001, following an experimental bone marrow transplant for severe Lupus. The work of the foundation is designed to spread awareness about Lupus and to positively impact college students who are those most commonly affected by this disease. Each year the L.I.F.E. Scholarship Committee selects students to receive the merit-based L.I.F.E. Scholarship. Selected winners demonstrate both academic excellence and involvement in their community. They have chosen to continue their education despite the hardships brought on by Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Currently, the foundation is having a national impact with over 90 merit-based scholarships awarded in over 30 states, and Jodi is striving to expand to every state in the country. Jodi is a distinguished alumni of Columbia University graduating in 1999 with a 3.7 GPA for her Bachelors in Psychology and Neuroscience. She conducted ecological research at Columbia's Biosphere II Center in Tucson, AZ when she was a student-researcher for Dr. Andrew Weil's Program in Integrative Medicine. Jodi was a member of the NCAA Division I Diving Team and National Honor Society. During her 1995-96 diving season, she received the ECAC Award of Valor from over 400 nominations. In 1997, she received the Giants Steps Award for most Courageous Female Student-Athlete from the NCAS and NCAA. In addition, Jodi was honored by President Clinton at the White House on National Student-Athlete Day. She also became the first female springboard diver from her region to receive a Gold Medal at the Empire State Games. Ms. Norton has always believed strongly in sharing her journey with Lupus through public speaking and became the first designee of Exceptional People with Lupus by the Lupus Foundation of America. In 2005, her journey as a student-athlete with Lupus was recognized in Richard Lapchick's book "100 Heroes: People in Sports Who Make This a Better World" designating her as one of the top 100 most inspirational sports figures in America. Jodi thrives on inspiring children to follow their dreams and has coached and spoken to elementary school children during Women Making History Month. Indeed, she is seeking to expand upon her natural gift for public speaking with further engagements across the country. Jodi Norton has been featured in a large array of publications including Boston Globe, Lupus Now, Lupus News, Columbia Record, University of Central Florida's newspaper, Desert Leaf Tucson, East Valley Tribune in Mesa, and Popular Immunology. In addition, she has written a book and is currently working on her second book, an autobiography chronicling her incredible journey. She is also currently working on an advanced degree in clinical research. One of Jodi's most stellar accomplishments was the successful execution of a Reverse Dive Straight from the 10-meter platform, a feat achieved worldwide by only Greg Louganis and Jodi. Throughout her experiences and challenges, her mother has been her strongest supporter and ally. Together, they founded "Toys of Courage" which recognizes the bravery of ill children through toys, books, and other distraction items. They find it incredibly rewarding to give hope to these children and watch their faces light up after receiving a gift. In the future, Jodi will continue to share her journey with Lupus to promote awareness of this frequently misunderstood disease, reaching and impacting others through inspirational speaking.
