Judith Rising is the Founder of the Autoimmune Advocacy Alliance. She has experienced every parent's fear. Her son Patrick was diagnosed with a disease, the auto-immune disorder Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). Blindsided by her son's diagnosis she knew she had to educate herself about the disease in order to provide a strong support system for Patrick. In the process, she learned that auto-immune disorders are when the body's immune system attacks the host. She learned of the increase of diagnoses, their debilitative nature and how many disorders are not only life impacting but life-threatening as in the death of her son Patrick from the disorder. After Patrick's death in 1998, Judith established the non-profit organization: Pat's Fund with the mission to educate, increase visibility and fund research related to the causes and cures of autoimmune diseases. Pat’s Fund, which still is in operation, has helped many people throughout the years and donates 100% of its profits to Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason (BRI) and the Greater NW Chapter: National MS Society. BRI is dedicated to discovering the causes and cures for immune mediated diseases including a wide range of autoimmune diseases. In 2011, Judith co-founded the Autoimmune Advocacy Alliance (A3) a collective effort to achieve clarity, understanding and support for the needs of those living with autoimmune diseases through education, public policy and advocacy. Their founding partner organizations are: our founding members include: American Diabetes Association, American Liver Foundation, ConnecT1D, Health Perspectives Group, Lupus Foundation, MS Society; Greater NW Chapter, National Alopecia Areata Foundation, Pat’s Fund, Platelet Disorder Support Association, Scleroderma Foundation; Evergreen Chapter. Judith is currently working on a book about the experiences of people living with Auto-immune disorders.
