More than 25 years
Mary taught chemistry at the secondary level before making the move to psychology and higher education. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. in 1984. She then taught and supervised at universities in Texas and California before returning to Minnesota to the Department of Professional Psychology at the University of St. Thomas (UST). She has now retired from UST and is professor emerita there. During her tenure at the university, Mary taught and served as Clinical Director in the graduate psychology program, assisting students in obtaining practicum and internship sites. She also served on numerous doctoral dissertation committees and chaired many of them. Mary is licensed to practice psychology and marriage and family therapy in Minnesota and was an active mental health clinician for several decades, most recently in practice with her spouse, an adult psychiatrist, now deceased. At the present time, her practice is limited to supervision and consultation with other mental health practitioners and clinicians, respectively. Supervision is her major research interest and pursuit as well. She is currently involved in a supervision study with three of her colleagues who reside in other areas of the country. Mary served on (and periodically) chaired the Minnesota state regulatory board for marriage and family therapy (MFT) for 18 years and the national regulatory board for many years. She was president of the national board in 2004 and 2005. Following her terms as a state board member, she became its Interim Executive Director for a couple of years during a period of board transition. She has been given awards for her contributions to marriage and family life and family therapy in Minnesota from the state MFT professional organization in addition to several other forms and sources of recognition both for her personal and professional roles. As a content expert in marriage and family therapy, Mary serves on the Examination Advisory Committee for the National Examination in Marital and Family Therapy, a requirement for licensure in the profession throughout the United States (with the exception of California). Part of Mary's work life includes presentations at professional conferences as well. She is active within the educational arena in her community and supports charities that benefit education, children, healthcare, and persons in need. She also serves on boards and councils that support educational and charitable endeavors. Mary's leisure activities include fitness, travel, cooking, reading and interaction with family and friends. She has recently taken up playing poker, enjoys the game, and has become fairly good at it.
