Dr. Monique Calisti, CEO and Head of Martel Media and Consulting, manages Martel Media's business and leads its strategic development, combining her technical ICT background and entrepreneurial experience. She holds a patent for METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR ADAPTIVE COMMUNICATION SERVICE ACCESS. She started her career as an electrical engineer working in telecommunications. She then moved into R&D, and by 2002 worked for Whitestein Technologies as Vice President of R&D. There, she was responsible for enterprise software product innovation, corporate research, business development, and scientific publishing. She also took over the role of Gérante Unique (2003 – 2007), and was Head of Innovation and Technology Relations (2006 – 2010), and Head of Market Development (2010 – 2010). She simultaneously served in the role of Editor in Chief Whitestein Series in Software Agent Technologies and Autonomic Computing for its affiliated company, Springer Media, for 8 years from (2002 – 2010). She currently evaluates ICT projects for the European Commission as an Expert Evaluator (2007 to present) and after consulting with Martel Media and Consulting for a while she became Head of Martel Media in 2014 and ultimately one of its owners and its current CEO. Dr. Calisti says that she loved electrical engineering from girlhood even though it was not very popular for girls. She believes she naturally progressed into her profession and current field of Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology Research & Development and Innovation. She has written extensively on these subjects, and speaks publicly on related topics and innovations occurring in the fields at conferences and symposiums. Last February she presented a Ted Talk entitled "Humans Do It Better." She has consulted with the European Commission for many years on its H2020 project, and recently wrote a 50 page proposal for next generation internet funding that competed against many other very competitive proposals and hers was the only one the EC accepted for funding. Dr. Calisti considers having this proposal accepted and funded her greatest professional accomplishment. Dr. Calisti credits her professional success to having a lot of passion for her work and a love of her work, technology, innovation and her colleagues as well as her endurance, courage, adaptability, intellectual capability and taking advantage of opportunities. In the next 5 years she plans to become a more public presence in the political scene to drive technology and innovation policies in Europe. She also wants to do more research in the area of digitization and she wants to educate teaches to help kids develop skills. She also wants to help society better understand the impact of AI on our life and deal with the subject of ethical AI. Dr. Calisti has great knowledge and passion to share with the WAoFP community and is looking forward to greater exposure of her work and connecting and exchanging knowledge with great women. She believes such exchange will help her grow and continue to learn.
