Susan Nkomo holds a Masters in Gender and Development Studies from the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex. She currently works an independent consultant and is the founder of the South African Observatory on Women’s Rights which is housed at Statistics South Africa. Ms. Nkomo is the author of various published articles including “Looking for Maria, her sisters, daughters and sons: an analysis of the gendered impact of the 1913 Natives Land Act”. With Ms Debbie Budlender, she is co author of the upcoming national report on MDG 3: Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment. Ms. Nkomo has extensive experience in the management of both public sector and civil society organizations. This includes heading the Office on the Status of Women at the Presidency and managing Social Sciences Research Development Forum. She has served on the boards of a number of knowledge generation organizations including the Association of African Women In Research and Development (AAWORD) the Counsel for the Development of Economic and Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), the NEPAD Gender Task Force as well as the SADC Parliamentary Forum Gender Working Group. Ms. Nkomo serves on the Scientific Committee for the Institute of Women and Gender Studies at the University of Pretoria as well as the Advisory Committee for the School of Government at the University of the North West. She is a passionate Women’s Rights advocate who serves on board member of the Positive Women’s Network and is on the Steering Council for South African Women in Dialogue (SAWID.) Ms. Nkomo has a keen interest in Gender and Water Management, specifically in contributing to the ways in which public sector managers recognize and address the gender impact of water policies, programs and projects. In this regard, she developed the 2008 Gender Strategy for the then Department of Water Affairs and Forestry.
