As veterinarian, I started my research on virology. After the PhD I moved to the developmental Biology field and I became involved in the design and plan of Animal Facility. From that point on, I focuesd my experience and my profession on lab animals.
1-5 Years
Direct multiple-site facility which conducts experiments using rodents, frogs, fish (zebrafish and Nothobranchius furzeri) and cephalopods (Octopus vulgaris). Organize personnel: cross-functional technicians, animal caretakers, contractors and the attending veterinarian. Plan and report budget process: prepare the proposal, review it and final approval. Orchestrate complex experiment scheduling and critical health monitoring programs. Implement and oversee SOPs consistent with laboratory best practices, European and national regulatory guidelines, animal ethics / welfare, and occupational health / safety policies. Maintain safety and security across normal operations, communication of research findings, and challenges such as animal rights activist raids by working closely with Police Department and Communications/PR Office. Manage Project Leaders and their respective PhD candidates and postdoc fellows by providing experimental design support and assisting in preparing projects for Ethical Committee evaluation. Experience on design, setting up and opening of multiple species animal facilities.
Dr. Viola Galligioni has been in lab animal management since 2013. She startet at the University of Trento (Italy) and late on 2014 she moved to Brno (Czech Republic) as Director of the Animal Center at the International Clinical Research Center (ICRC). For the past two and a half years. Dr. Galligioni manages the facility and staff and has conducted pre-clinical research.
