Dr. Fereshteh Bagherimiyab Hunkeler has over 14 years of experience in engineering and academia. Most recently a Research Scientist at the LCH Laboratory of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland, she has a demonstrated track record of success in complex research, academic and project management endeavors. She has expertise in hydraulics and mechanical engineering, and has focused her research on flood protection, water management, river engineering, climate change, and the impact and relationship between water and public health.
Inspired to enter the field from an interest in developing countries, Fereshteh is driven by the desire to help improve sanitation and make a lasting impact on communites around the world. She earned her PhD in Environmental Engineering from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, and underwent a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Waterloo in Canada. Her certifications are vast and include most recently a Planning & Design of Sanitation Systems and Technologies Certificate (2019) and Introduction to Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage Certificate (2018).
Fereshteh has been published numerous times in peer-reviewed journals and other industry publications, and has served as a peer-reviewer for Journal of Hydrology, Journal of Hydraulic Research. She has received awards and recognition for her academic and professional contributions to the field, including First Prize in the John F. Kennedy Student Paper Competition through the International Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research.
A resident of Birmensdorf ZH, Canton of Zürich, Fereshteh speaks four languages: Persian, English, French and German. Looking ahead, she hopes to increase her teaching activities and duties, and aspires to become a full professor. In addition to the WAoFP, she belongs to the International Hydraulic Research Association, and she hopes to connect with fellow academics and industry professionals to exchange ideas and share knowledge on topics of water quality, wastewater management, and sustainable infrastructure.
