More than 25 years
At the age of 15, Von Khamken left Laos as a refugee. She spent 2 years in a staging area before being allowed to come to the US. At the time, she did not speak any English, but went to school while working full-time. Von got her nursing degree and spent many years in the ICU, providing critical care nurse. Von decided to branch out from critical care, but wanted to remain in the nursing sector, so she went back to school and earned a Master' degree in Anesthesiology. Her company, Anesthesia Medical group, works with 6 different hospitals, but she focuses on the Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Since emigrating to the US, Von has been back to Laos 3 times, one of which was help flood victims in Laos. She has helped with fundraising and led the group that went to help. She also helps many temples and other associations of various types with fundraising for charity. Looking ahead, Von wants to get more involved in public service and speak to youth to help guide them to a better future.
