Simone Badal

 

Simone Badal is a Lecturer (Associate Professor) at the University of the West Indies, Mona campus where she is developing the first Caribbean cancer cell lines with a focus on prostate and breast. This will enable a better understanding these diseases towards amelioration among people of African ethnicity. She also teaches undergraduate courses in Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Anatomy and Natural Products at the University. Simone began her career with her father’s guidance and brings a true passion for cancer research to her role.

She holds a PhD (2012) and MPhil. (2005) in Biochemistry and BSc. (2003) In Biochemistry and Chemistry from The University of the West Indies, Mona in addition to a MBA (2006) from the University of Wales, Cardiff. With a passion to give back, Simone started the ACRJ (anticancer Research Jamaica) Foundation that provides scholarships to high school drop-outs. Her work is published in numerous peer reviewed journals including Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Journal of Applied Toxicology, Cancer Cell International and Fitoterapia among others. Moving forward, she hopes to continue cancer research and to be a pioneer in her profession whilst enacting national change through policy implementation.

When not engaged with work, Simone enjoys reading, TV, movies and going to the gym.
