Dr. Evangelia Charmandari has more than three decades of experience in the medical field. As Professor of Pediatrics and Pediatric Endocrinology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, she undertakes clinical, research, teaching and administrative work. She is also an Affiliated Investigator and the Scientific Supervisor of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Center of Clinical, Experimental Surgery and Translational Research, Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens, Athens, Greece. She is an internationally renowned expert in Pediatric Endocrinology, and has always had a passion for both science and clinical work.
After earning her medical degree from the University of Thessaloniki, Greece, Evangelia completed her specialization in General Pediatrics in the UK. She was further subspecialized in Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology at the London Centre for Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and University College Hospital in London, UK. She is a certified Pediatrician and Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinologist by the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, London, UK. Evangelia obtained a MSc in Clinical Pediatrics and a PhD in Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology, which were both awarded by the University College London, University of London, London, UK. She subsequently undertook a Postdoctoral fellowship in Molecular Endocrinology and Cellular Biology at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Maryland, USA. She also worked as a Consultant in Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology at St. James’ University Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds, UK.
The author of more than 300 publications, Evangelia has been featured in countless scientific journals, book chapters, and international conference proceedings. She is a highly sought after public speaker, and has been invited to present at more than 200 conferences and international meetings. She was the recipient of the Henning Andersen Prize by the European Society of Pediatric Endocrinology (basic research), as well as several prizes of the Hellenic Endocrine Society, the Medical Association of Athens, the Hellenic Association of Adolescent Medicine, and Health Business Awards. Finally, she has attracted €2,477,000.00 research funding for clinical, translational and basic science projects.
Based in Athens, Greece, Evangelia is bilingual in English and Greek. In addition to the WAoFP, she is a member of the European Society of Pediatric Endocrinology, Hellenic Society of Pediatric Endocrinology, Hellenic Endocrine Society, British Society for Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, and the Medical Society of Athens. Outside of her professional endeavors, she enjoys travel, theatre and reading.
